The Charlotte business community gathered Monday for a diagnostic take on the U.S. economy from the city's top industries. Executives of Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Duke Energy, Nucor and Premier health care alliance offered a grim picture of slow growth and high unemployment.

If the U.S. economy had a life coach, every pep-talk these days would be along the lines of "Look pal, you gotta 'Fake it 'til you make it.' Confidence breeds success. All this worry is bringing you down."

Belk Boosting HQ Headcount 10%

Belk is boosting employment at its Charlotte headquarters by about 10 percent thanks to the popularity of online shopping.

The 150 jobs Belk plans to add at its corporate headquarters are "management-level" and focused mainly on e-commerce, says spokeswoman Jessica Graham.

"Our online site, Belk.com has been growing tremendously - it's the fastest growing area of our business right now," says Graham.

Half the Charlotte City Council, the mayor and a couple of Mecklenburg County Commissioners are headed to New York City Monday for the Charlotte Chamber’s Inter City visit.

The Charlotte Chamber’s annual trip to another city is typically a rite of spring. But back in May, airplane problems made most participants miss their flight for a scheduled visit to London.

“New York was our second choice,” says Charlotte Chamber President Bob Morgan. So that’s where he’s headed Tuesday with about 100 local business leaders and public officials.
