Police officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District are going door-to-door Uptown giving parents the run-down on bus changes and security restrictions during the Democratic National Convention.

CMS Police Chief Bud Cesena says the first week of September will pose some challenges for the 372 students and their families who live inside the I-277 loop.

"Some bus stops - because they're in the hot zone - won't exist any more," says Cesena. "So we're making sure the children and their parents know exactly where to go."

Mecklenburg County has at least 270 known cemetery sites. Some are obvious, located along a main road or next to a church. But other burial grounds have become obscured by the passage of time, neglect, or urban sprawl. WFAE's Mark Rumsey reports on a few local cemeteries that are "hidden in plain sight."

Panel Says Community Needs To Tackle Education Problems Together

A school superintendent, a school board chairman and a former governor sat down to talk education last night as part of the build up to the DNC. They didn't solve any problems, but they discussed challenges facing North Carolina students and suggested ways to overcome them.

The challenges include fifth graders who can't read, teenagers who drop out, parents who don't check up on their kids, and teachers who don't get the support they need.

Charlotte Observer - District Attorney: CMPD Officer Acted Lawfully In Fatal Shooting

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer who shot and killed 28-year-old Michael Deangelo Laney during a struggle to arrest him in July will not be prosecuted.
Mecklenburg District Attorney Andrew Murray wrote in a letter Monday to the police chief that the use of deadly force by Officer A.J. Holzhauer was justified.
"There is no evidence that Officer Holzhauer acted unlawfully," Murray's letter to Police Chief Rodney Monroe said.

In Studio With Matisyahu

Listen to full interview below.

Matisyahu was born Matthew Miller. He was inspired to embrace the strict Lubavitch Hassidic sect of Judaism in part by references to the Old Testament in Reggae music. While in Charlotte for a performance, Matisyahu spoke to WFAE's Marshall Terry about trying to channel the power of prayer into his music, shaving his Hassidic beard, and motorcycle excursions into the country while on tour.

Parents and kids are shopping for school clothes. For many Charlotte-Mecklenburg School students it's not much of a choice. About a third of CMS schools require kids to wear uniforms like a solid color shirt and khakis. Most of them have lots of students from low-income families.
