Gaston Parents Push To Keep Schools Open, Preserve Small Classes

York Chester Middle School is one of three schools the Gaston County School board would like to close in cost cutting effort.

The Gaston County School board is looking at closing two schools in Gastonia and one in McAdenville to save nearly $1 million a year. They're old buildings with space to spare and they have small class sizes. Those smaller class sizes make them popular with parents.

CMS Interim Superintendent Hugh Hattabaugh says he won't recommend doing away with school days that end at 4:15. The district shifted several schools to a later start time this year to save nearly $4 million. This week many parents told the school board the later school day disrupts family routines.

Hattabaugh does want to make a few schedule changes. He plans to recommend shifting schedules at ten schools. At least two of those have end times at 4:15. He says that could save the district $600,000.

Chiquita CEO Fernando Aguirre is back in the Charlotte area this week. On Wednesday, he was at the Club at Longview in Weddington. The Chiquita Classic golf tournament is moving to the club. The tournament, a stop on the the PGA's second-tier Nationwide Tour, had been in Cincinnati.

While there, he updated WFAE's Mark Rumsey on the company's move from Cincinnati to Charlotte.

Commentary: Wake Forest On The Right Track

It's been nearly four years since Wake Forest announced it would no longer require SAT or ACT scores for college admission. The decision received a lot of attention in part because Wake Forest is a prestigious school.

Now, according to a story in the Raleigh News and Observer, Wake Forest reports that its quality of students is improving because of the policy.

That doesn't surprise commentator Bill Diskin.

As a parent, I've never cared much about SAT scores. I simply don't think they are an accurate indicator of how well our kids will do in college.
