The Charlotte Mecklenburg school board, led by Democrats, have selected a fellow Democrat to represent the largely Republican Sixth District.
The board met Thursday and picked Amelia Stinson-Wesley of Pineville to fill the remainder of the term vacated when Tim Morgan was elected to an at-large seat on the board, in November. Stinson-Wesley will serve the next two years. She's 43, a Methodist minister, and mother of two CMS elementary students. She'll be sworn in before next Tuesday's meeting.
A task force trying to determine how to compensate victims of North Carolina's sterilization program expects to vote on recommendations next week. They're considering asking the state to pay victims anywhere from $20,000 to $50,000.
Victims and family members of those who were forced into sterilization by the state's eugenics board haven't liked any of the figures the task force has come up with.
