'Crap' Comment Lands Man In Jail

It's been a bad week for Tony Murray of Summerville, SC. You may even call it a crappie week, just not to Charleston County Magistrate Linda Lombardi.

Murray appeared before the judge on Thursday on charges related to bizarre incident at a Wachovia bank branch in Charleston that prompted police to shut down several Charleston streets and call in the bomb squad.

Lombardi set Murray's bond at $25,000. That prompted Murray to say "That's crap," as he walked out of the room, according to the Post and Courier.

More Legal Challenges To Taxi Changes At CLT Airport

Another lawsuit has been filed against the City of Charlotte over a plan to strip eight taxi companies and their drivers of permits to work the airport. The controversial limits take effect on July 17. Three separate lawsuits now hope to stop the change.

The latest legal challenge comes from the owner of Universal Cab. Mohamed Moustafa claims Charlotte airport officials conspired with the Greater Charlotte Hospitality and Tourism Alliance to offer airport contracts only to companies that agreed to become a major sponsor of the tourism booster group.

Hospital System Offers Deal In Standoff

Carolinas HealthCare System has offered a proposal to end its longstanding contract with Mecklenburg County and settle a dispute that has escalated in recent months.
The hospital's proposal reflects some ideas already discussed by county leaders, including ending a county subsidy to support indigent patients. It also recommends phasing out county money for a psychiatric hospital on Billingsley Road over three years, which County Manager Harry Jones proposed in May.

Duke Energy Looking For Power From Poultry Waste

Duke Energy is in search of energy powered by poultry waste.

Ten years from now, utilities in North Carolina must get 12.5 percent of their power from renewable sources. A small portion of that renewable energy must come from poultry waste.

It's now easier to meet that requirement. Utilities could always use the electricity from poultry waste, but new legislation also lets them harvest the thermal energy those facilities produce.

Duke spokesman Jason Walls said the company is taking advantage.

Jones Recommends Rejection Of CHS Proposal

Mecklenburg County Manager Harry Jones said Thursday he is recommending the county end its contract with Carolinas HealthCare System at the end of June 2013, a year earlier than a proposal offered this week by the hospital system.
In a memo to county commissioners this (Thursday) afternoon, Jones said the hospital's proposal is "clearly not in the County's best interest" and that the county should reject the offer. In part, he said ending the contract sooner would save the county $7.5 million toward operating losses at the psychiatric hospital at CMC-Randolph.
