A showdown between Davidson-based WDAV-FM and National Public Radio over the off-air activities of a program host came to a head Friday when NPR announced it would no longer distribute "World of Opera," which is produced at WDAV. NPR's decision came after WDAV refused to fire the program's host, Lisa Simeone, over her involvement in a Washington, D.C., protest related to the "Occupy Wall Street" movement. WDAV said it would take over distribution next month.

White lightning. Hooch. The original mountain dew.

It's hard to talk about moonshine without evoking winks and smiles. It carries a mystique. If you own some, you whisper about it. If you don't, you can bet someone you know does. It's probably stored in the back of their freezer.

Moonshine also carries a certain romance. Because the truth is, there's a story sealed in every Mason jar of the stuff.

WDAV Keeps World Of Opera Host; Activism Prompts NPR To Reevaluate Program

The host of a national show produced by public radio station WDAV in Davidson is causing a stir because of her off-air political activities. The program doesn't deal with news or current affairs. It's The World of Opera hosted by Lisa Simeone. NPR distributes the program nationally, but it's now re-evaluating that.

The World of Opera is pretty much what you'd expect. Each show features segments of an opera that host Lisa Simeone re-caps.

A crowd filled the auditorium in CPCC's Overcash Building to hear the 12 candidates running for three at-large seats on the CMS Board debate.

There are twelve candidates actively campaigning for three at-large seats on the CMS school board. Wednesday night, they fielded questions from the public at a forum hosted by the non-profit MeckEd and WFAE. The number of candidates meant their answers had to be short, but they still revealed key differences in what makes a good school system.

Controversy has erupted this week over a public radio music announcer's involvement with protests in Washington related to the Occupy Wall Street movement, and there's a Davidson angle. Lisa Simeone is the free-lance host of NPR's "World of Opera," which is produced at Davidson-based classical music station WDAV-FM. As of Thursday midday, she still had that job, though she was fired from another contract gig at Washington's WAMU-FM.
