3 Teens Charged With The Murder Of A Man In East Charlotte

Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office

Updated at 3:45 p.m.

Police have arrested a third teenager in the fatal shooting of a man in east Charlotte Friday afternoon.

CMPD said in a statement Monday afternoon that it has arrested another unnamed 15-year-old in the murder of Eskinder Dawit Asefaw, 26.

Police identified the 15-year-old as a suspect and obtained an order for his arrest. Garinger High School Resource Officers located and arrested him. According to police, the teen was in possession of a handgun and a stolen vehicle at the time of his arrest.

CMPD had already charged Tavone Tyrik Smith, 17, and another unnamed 15-year-old with murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in the shooting of Asefaw. The third teen faces the same charges, CMDP said.

Officers found Asefaw with a gunshot wound while responding to a call on Wembley Drive off Central Avenue Friday. Asefaw was taken to the hospital, where he died the next morning.

Smith is in custody at the Mecklenburg County jail. The two 15-year-olds have been transported to a juvenile detention facility, police said.

This was the 16th homicide in Charlotte this year.
