Adams, Pittenger Win; Harris Not Ready To Concede

Her challengers doubted her Mecklenburg County residency, but Congresswoman Alma Adams easily won the Democratic primary in the 12th district that’s now entirely within Mecklenburg County.

Adams was leading with 42.3 percent of the vote with nearly all precincts reporting. Challengers Malcolm Graham (28.8 percent) and Tricia Cotham (21 percent) finished second and third.

Adams will face Leon Threatt in the general election. Threatt won the 12th district Republican primary (41.7 percent).

Meanwhile, 9th District Congressman Robert Pittenger barely survived the Republican primary. Pittenger won by just 135 votes over challenger Mark Harris, 9,257 (34.9 percent) to 9,122 (34.4 percent).

Harris is not ready to concede. He will request a recount since the vote is so close. State law automatically allows for a recount if the difference is within 1 percent.

Harris noted that 65 percent of ballots went against Pittenger since former Union County Commissioner Todd Johnson finished third with 30.6 percent of the vote.

Harris and Jones won counties east of Charlotte, but Pittenger dominated the precincts in southeast Mecklenburg County.
