City planners working on updating our outdated zoning codes have decided to upgrade the process to something more ambitious: a comprehensive plan to chart our course for the next 20 years. We hear about it.

Charlotte has begun the process of updating its comprehensive plan - the city’s first since 1975. As stale as that might sound, the new plan will dramatically influence how they city grows over the next 20 years. The city planning director Taiwo Jaiyeoba has said the city needs a unifying plan for future growth, something we haven't had in decades.

After initially working to rewrite the city's outdated zoning regulations, planners decided to go much bigger and develop a more inclusive comprehensive vision plan. Work on the CharlotteFuture 2040 planis just starting and will take into consideration land use, community design, transportation, housing, the environment, economic development, parks and other public facilities.

The 2040 plan will create a framework for future growth and development. Since everyone has a stake in that, we'll check in on the process and find out why it matters with the city's planning director.
