Charlotte Talks: Florence Updates From Wilmington To Charlotte

Duke Energy

Monday, Sept. 17, 2018

The Carolinas have a ways to go before Hurricane Florence is behind us. We have updates from WFAE reporters in Wilmington and Charlotte, and the latest on outages from Duke Energy.

As anticipated, Hurricane Florence brought down trees in the Charlotte area, taking power lines down with them. Flood-prone creeks spilled over their banks, creating dangerous situations, including in Union County where a one-year-old child was swept away.

Little Sugar Creek at Archdale Drive was more than a foot above flood stage Sunday afternoon.

The damage was mild compared to what Wilmington and eastern North Carolina experienced. Wilmington has been essentially cut off by flooding that swallowed all roads leading into the city.

"We've got a tremendous job ahead with recovery," Gov. Roy Cooper said after surveying the flood zone from a Coast Guard plane.

WFAE's David Boraks has an update from hard-hit Wilmington, and WFAE's Steve Harrison has the latest from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management.
