Charlotte Talks Regional Real Estate Update: Charlotte's Tight Housing Market Driving Buyers Out

Tuesday, September 25, 2018

Inventory is low. Prices are up. Not a good recipe for making it easy to buy a house in Charlotte. We hear from real estate professionals about what’s going on and how long this may last.

Trying to buy a house in Charlotte? You may be finding it very difficult. Inventory shortages and high prices have continued through the hot summer market. Some buyers are getting frustrated with the extremely low number of available homes and lack of affordability and heading outside of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. So are developers.

Outlying areas like Gaston, York, and Union counties are seeing tremendous growth. Adding to the tight market, homebuilders aren't building mid-range and lower priced homes which puts the squeeze on first-time home buyers. Developers cite a lack of available land and rising building costs.

We talk with local real estate and development professionals in the industry about what's going on, what's driving buyers outside of Charlotte, and what it will take for this tight market to let up.

Guests

Jason Gentry, President of the Charlotte Regional Realtor Association and Realtor/Broker with Premiere Sotheby’s International

Rick Judson, Charlotte residential developer and former chairman of the National Association of Home Builders

Joe Padilla, Executive Director of the Real Estate and Building Industry Coalition (REBIC), a trade organization for local builders, developers and realtors.
