The 2017-2018 Broadway series at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center is sold out. The reason? The Tony Award winning musical Hamilton that comes to Charlotte next fall.
Blumenthal Performing Arts CEO Tom Gabbard said the demand for this season of Broadway shows in Charlotte is off the charts. He attributes that to Hamilton.
“It’s a phenomenon in the theater business,” he said. “We haven’t seen a show with this kind of following in a long, long time.”
Gabbard said this year the Blumenthal has 15,000 season ticket holders. That’s 5,000 more than a normal year. Gabbard said his long standing relationship with the producer of Hamilton has something to do with getting the musical to Charlotte.
“The fact that we’re in the first year of the tour is a great honor. There are a lot of cities that are getting it a year or two after us,” he said. “We don’t take for granted that Charlotte is one of those places producers want to make sure their shows play.”
He said if you aren’t a season ticket holder and are still hoping to see the musical in Charlotte you haven’t quite missed your shot. But it will be expensive. Some third party websites are claiming to sell Hamilton tickets starting at $754.
Gabbard said the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center will be selling some single tickets about a year from now for a few performances in October and November 2018.
