Duke Energy's commercial renewable energy division is expanding into New York State by buying one of that state's largest solar energy farms.
Duke announced Monday that it's buying the 24.9-megawatt Shoreham Solar Commons project in Brookhaven, about 60 miles east of New York City. The project is being built by a company called Invenergy on a former golf course.
It's expected to be complete by the middle of 2018. Duke will sell all the project's electricity to the Long Island Power Authority.
The division, Duke Energy Renewables, operates solar and wind farms around the country, selling power to other utilities as well as businesses and institutions.
