Charlotte Mecklenburg police say the cases of two women who reported that they were drugged at nightclubs at the downtown Epicentre entertainment complex in recent weeks are still active investigations. At a press conference today, Sgt. Chris Rains did not release specifics about the cases but said the drug allegations are still being investigated.
"We haven’t been able to establish just yet if anybody has been drugged at all," Rains said. "We will go on the assumption that when someone reports it and believes it that it is the God’s honest truth and we will move heaven and earth to establish that, but [we haven't] been able to establish any of that. There’s a lot of work that goes into getting that established."
Police say time is a factor because oftentimes people report suspected drugging days after the incident. They advise people who suspect their drinks may contain drugs to call police immediately and hold onto the drink for testing.
"If you take a drink and it doesn't taste right and you know what it's supposed to taste like and it has a funny taste, save that, don't consume, immediately notify us because that's something that we could test," said Lt. Bret Balamucki. "If it does lead us to somebody where we identify where there is somebody who has tampered with a drink, we can go full force with the district attorney's office and charge them."
Earlier this month, a 23-year-old woman said she blacked out and became ill after consuming a drink at the Suite nightclub at the Epicentre. Last month, a 31-year-old woman said her drink was ‘roofied’ at the Rooftop 210 club. Police later apologized to that woman, who said an officer told her she would have to return to the club in order to file a report.
