Charlotte Mecklenburg police investigated multiple threats reported at locations across the area Thursday afternoon, ultimately finding them to be unsubstantiated. Similar threats were reported at businesses, government buildings, news outlets and other entities across the country.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a statement Thursday that it responded to bomb threat calls for service at 16 different locations within its jurisdiction. Police say all of the threats came in between 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.

“No suspicious packages or devices were located at any of the locations,” CMPD ultimately determined.

According to reporting by WBTV, businesses received the threat via an email that read, a “mercenary hid the bomb in the building where [the] business is located.” The email also included that if the bomb was detonated, “there [would be] many victims.” The sender asked for $20,000 in bitcoin to not detonate the bomb.

CMPD is warning residents to “remain vigilant” and to call 911 if they receive a threat or see anything suspicious.

Similar threats were made in South Carolina. The York County Sheriff’s Office tweeted that it received and cleared three threats within its jurisdiction. Police departments around the country also investigated similar bomb threats and found them not to be credible.
