Red Light Cameras On This Evening's Charlotte Council Agenda

Charlotte City Manager Marcus Jones will discuss red light cameras during tonight’s City Council meeting.

Last month, Jones recommended against bringing them back to Charlotte. That recommendation concerns Mayor Vi Lyles.

“We have a new plan called Vision Zero. That’s zero losses from fatalities and many tools in the toolbox and red light cameras is one of them," Lyles said last month on WFAE's Charlotte Talks.

Lyles said she wanted to hear more behind the reasoning for Jones’ recommendation. Jones is expected to give that explanation today during a meeting that begins at 5 p.m.

Red light cameras were used in Charlotte from 1998 to 2006. The cameras were taken down after an appeals court ruled that 90 percent of the revenue generated from citations had to go to school systems.
