The fallout of Atrium's decision to end its nearly 40-year relationship with Southeast Anesthesiology Consultants and its parent company Mednax has spurred charges that the new company intends to reduce the number of doctors it utilizes — a claim that the new company taking over and Atrium denies.

Mecklenburg County was ranked the fifth healthiest county in the state. That’s according to a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation report. The annual study looks at how long people live and how healthy their lifestyles are. But there are some less-than-pleasant details.

Atrium, UNC Health Care Call Off Merger Talks

Atrium Health and UNC Health Care say they have suspended plans for a merger after the two companies were unable to come to an agreement.

In an earnings call on Thursday, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina said 2017 is the first year it has made money from health insurance plans bought through the federal exchange. The company reported a 7.8 percent increase in its net income ratio for 2017, compared with a 2.2 percent increase over the last five years. 

North Carolina doesn't have enough school nurses or counselors, and that's impacting child health across the state. The North Carolina Institute of Medicine and the advocacy group N.C. Child gave the state "D" grades for school health and mental health on its Child Health Report Card.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina

With the new federal tax law, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina is going to save a lot of money. The company says it will put the $40 million tax savings and an additional $10 million of other money into community health programs around the state. 

Flu Deaths Rise To 200 In North Carolina

Twenty-seven people died of the flu in North Carolina last week, the latest in a particularly deadly flu season that has seen 200 deaths now across the Tar Heel state.


North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein is requesting more information on the merger of Atrium Health, formerly known as Carolinas Healthcare System, and UNC Health Care.

One day after Carolinas HealthCare System changed its name to Atrium Health to avoid ties to a specific region, the hospital announced it is exploring an expansion into Georgia. Atrium said Navicent Health, which is based in Macon, will become part of its health care system.
