Power Finally Coming Back On After Storms

Utility crews are still cleaning up after Thursday night’s severe storms across the Carolinas and some customers are still without power, including in the Winston-Salem area, Salisbury, and Rockingham. Duke Energy says those customers may not get power back until Sunday.

Charlotte Region Still Has 12,000 Outages From Storm

There are still about 12,000 power outages in Mecklenburg and neighboring counties. About 350,000 Duke and Progress energy customers lost power after a severe thunderstorm Friday night.

Keith Meza, is a Duke Energy crew member who has been working almost non-stop since then. He was in north Charlotte Friday helping remove tree limbs that had fallen and damaged power lines.

"Other than ice storms and hurricanes we've had, it's probably one of the worst ones I've ever seen due to high winds and lightning and hail," Meza says.

Veterans Build Habitat Home For One Of Their Own

Construction began Friday – Flag Day - on the first Habitat Charlotte home built by veterans for a veteran.  They're racing to finish within 2 ½ weeks, so the home can be dedicated on the eve of Independence Day.  WFAE spoke with some of the participants at Friday's kick-off.
