WFAE hosts forum for "Charlotte Mission Possible"
The economic recession and other challenges have made the past year an especially difficult time for charitable organizations seeking to meet basic human needs in the Charlotte area. To help address this critical issue, WFAE hosted a Public Conversation community forum on Monday, Oct. 5, as part of the local media collaboration, "Charlotte Mission Possible." This initiative is designed to help Charlotte residents understand charitable needs in the community, and find innovative ways to meet those needs. The collaboration has generated hundreds of suggestions from local citizens through an online survey from Edison Nation.
What do you think are some of the best ideas to come out of this project? Continue the discussion here.

Non-profit consolidation talk popular, but realistic?
These days, there's a lot of talk about whether non-profits should consolidate all or at least a portion of their operations. As part of a media collaboration called Charlotte Mission Possible, we asked for public input on how to improve charitable non-profits. Consolidation emerged as a strong theme.
Both WFAE and the Charlotte Observer have taken a closer look at this issue with stories in the past week. In this segment, Morning Edition host Scott Graf talks to WFAE's Julie Rose and Eric Frazier of the Charlotte Observer about what they learned.

Unofficial shelters popular with Charlotte's homeless
WFAE is part of a media collaboration called Charlotte: Mission Possible that is looking for creative solutions to the unmet needs in our community. Homelessness often falls near the top of that list. The latest count estimates at least 6,000 people are homeless in Mecklenburg County. Advocates and local officials say Charlotte needs more homeless shelters and more affordable housing to meet the needs. But rather than wait for that to happen, some members of the community have taken things into their own hands. WFAE's Julie Rose reports.

Mission Possible and Crowdsourcing
We'll talk about the local effort of several media organizations in Charlotte (including WFAE) to address our community's needs and encourage the city's citizens to think of ways to meet those needs. This effort is called Mission Possible, and right now the coalition is asking for members of the community to take an online survey that asks for their ideas on how to better meet the needs of people in Charlotte. This project, and those like it around the country are examples of crowdsourcing. We'll talk about exactly what that is, and about some of the ideas that are coming in via the survey that may help meet Charlotte's community needs.
Guests Matt Spangard - Vice President of Interactive Technologies, Edison Nation

Jane McIntyre: United Way campaign shouldn't be an irritant to donors
The new president of the United Way of Central Carolinas doesn't officially start until August 26, but she's already spending half her time there while keeping things afloat at the YWCA. That balancing act foreshadows the work she has ahead in convincing the community that the United Way still has a role to play in Charloote and is worthy of donations.
WFAE's Julie Rose sat down with Jane McIntyre at her YWCA office.

Social media advocates say that non-profits can benefit greatly from social media and our panel of experts is on the forefront of creating strategies for non-profits to use.
