Federal law gives foreclosure protection to renters

Simone Orendain
Thursday December 10, 2009
MULTIMEDIA

Foreclosures across the country continue to rise and last month, the Mortgage Bankers Association said the rate would climb through next year. The group reported that one in seven homeowners either had past due payments or was in foreclosure. In North Carolina and Mecklenburg County the trend also continues upward. While the obvious effects of foreclosure hit homeowners directly, another group of residents is affected - renters.

Back in May, President Obama signed the Protecting Tenants of Foreclosure Act, which helps renters of foreclosed properties. WFAE's Simone Orendain sat down with Charlotte Legal Aid Attorney Chad Crockford to find out how the law is playing out locally.
