'The Commish' debuts on WTVI

WTVI debuts a new program this week that aims at providing an entertaining take on Mecklenburg County government. It's not the first time the county's gone into the TV production business.

The Commish presents commissioners and the budget and policy decisions they make in a different light.

Jack Brayboy, formerly with Fox News Rising, hosts the half hour show. Here's a taste of it:

"A lot of the tone for this process is going to be set by the board chairman Jennifer Roberts. Her day-to-day routine and her duties are unlike that of her fellow commissioners. This lady is always on the go. Recently she gave us a little example of what her weeks are like.

WTVI's CEO Elsie Garner hopes what she calls the show's informal, folksy approach gets people to take notice of local government.

"What we're trying to accomplish is to get the average person on the street to pay attention to who their elected officials are and what they're thinking and what they're doing," says Garner.

According to WTVI, the county has spent about $70,000 to produce the show's 14 episodes. Garner says that was before the budget crunch. She doesn't expect to get any more county money for The Commish at least for a few years.

Another county-funded TV show, The Mecklenburgers sitcom, didn't attract many viewers. Garner says that's not discouraging because The Commish has a different premise.

The show debuted this week on WTVI's main channel.
