Lefty Driesell, Davidson Players Return To Honor Mike Maloy

Former Davidson coach Lefty Driesell and some of his former players from the 1960s are returning to campus this weekend. They will dedicate a memorial for Mike Maloy, Davidson's first African-American scholarship athlete. DavidsonNews.net has the story here. Maloy died from the flu last year in Austria, where he was a teacher and coach. At Davidson, Maloy was an All-American and led the school to three-straight NCAA appearances. He left after his junior year to turn pro. Maloy played in the ABA and in Austria. Driesell, who coached Davidson from 1960-69, calls Maloy the greatest player he's ever coached. He's also coached at Maryland, James Madison and Georgia State. The memorial will be in the lobby of the Baker Sports Complex. As great as Maloy was, he's not eligible for Davidson's Athletics Hall of Fame because he didn't graduate.
