Rhonda Lennon Subject Of E-Mail Controversy
The CMS Board has received criticism for a number of cuts, including the decision to ax middle school sports. Board member Rhonda Lennon is now getting attention for an e-mail she sent to a constituent whose daughter is on her school's middle school basketball team. The mother, Lynne Sanders of Huntersville, wrote to Lennon that sports help motivate her daughter to keep her grades up. Sanders lamented that her daughter said she would probably get all C's next year without basketball. To which Lennon responded: Find me $1.2MM and I will be happy to, but I cannot cut teacher positions to pay for MS sports. Its sad that your daughter isn't self motivated enough to want better than C's on her own and not because of sports. The e-mail exchange was first posted on the Meck Deck blog. WCNC-TV followed with this report. "I didn't expect a personal attack and that's what I felt," Sanders told the station. Lennon said she would have said it differently if she could do it over again, but the message would be largely the same. "Probably the only thing I would have said differently would be that I do think that children need to find something other than sports to motivate them. We're here for academic success. That's our job."
