Wells Fargo customers in North and South Carolina will soon have to pay a monthly fee for their checking account. Starting Aug. 7, customers will have to pay $7 a month for use of their checking account unless they meet minimum thresholds. The fee will be $5 a month if customers forgo paper statements and get them only online. Customers will not be charged any fee if they maintain a balance of $1,500 or have direct deposits of more than $500 a month. Many customers in the Carolinas still have free accounts left over from Wachovia, which Wells purchased in 2008.
