State lawmakers will be back in Raleigh Tuesday to continue work on redrawing North Carolina's 13 congressional district boundaries. A joint house-senate redistricting committee is acting on a state court's urging that lawmakers fix what the judges indicated was a map gerrymandered with excessive partisan bias.

RALEIGH — Gov. Roy Cooper has vetoed one bill that addressed potential voting in North Carolina by non-citizens but signed another that strengthens mail-in absentee balloting rules following evidence of fraud in a congressional race.

A plan to substantially increase taxes on vaping products in North Carolina initially received bipartisan support at the General Assembly last week before a powerful lobbyist thwarted the plan. Lawmakers from both parties called the behind the scenes effort both unusual and disingenuous.

Mecklenburg County wasn't the only place with important races on the ballot on Tuesday. Voters in Gastonia sent two new faces to City Council, while in South Carolina, York will have a new mayor for the first time since 2002.

Voters in Mecklenburg County went to the polls Tuesday to choose leaders of local cities, towns and the second largest school district in North Carolina. Additionally, on the ballot was a quarter-cent sales tax to benefit arts, parks and greenways and education.

In the Charlotte City Council at-large race, mayor pro tem Julie Eiselt led the way to reelection with 23.9% of all votes Tuesday. Braxton Winston narrowly led James “Smuggie” Mitchell for the next-highest vote total, with Winston recording 22.07% while Mitchell had 22.04%.  Dimple Ajmera was in fourth with 20%.

That is based on all 195 precincts reporting.

Voters in Union County were asked to decide Tuesday on numerous city leaders, including Indian Trail, Monroe and Waxhaw mayors.
