There were essentially two elections in North Carolina.

One was from early voting – before Biden’s surprisingly large win Saturday in South Carolina, and before former candidates Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar and Beto O’Rourke endorsed him.

President Trump last held a rally at Bojangles' Coliseum before the 2018 midterms.

And Monday’s rally was bigger in almost every way. More noise. More passion. And there was a crowd of hundreds who couldn’t get inside but watched the event on a big-screen TV in the parking lot.

WFAE kicks off its Tuesday’s Election Night coverage with a one-hour call-in show. Our guests will include Catawba College political science professor Michael Bitzer and two other analysts: Michael Barnes, a former Democratic member of Charlotte City Council, where he served as mayor pro tem; and Dan Barry, the immediate past chairman of the Union County Republican Party. They spoke to WFAE "All Things Considered" host Gwendolyn Glenn about their expectations.

Tom Steyer, the billionaire hedge fund investor and environmental activist who staked his campaign on a strong finish in South Carolina, suspended his presidential campaign on Saturday.

Steyer aggressively courted the black vote in the state, with a focus on racial and economic justice but had a disappointing finish. Former Vice President Joe Biden was projected to win the state.

South Carolina's Democratic presidential primary is Saturday. Six candidates are on the ballot in the state, they include Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders, Tom Steyer and Elizabeth Warren.

President Trump has faced scant opposition in the Republican primaries, but he is campaigning all the same. As Democrats hold their contested primaries, the president often turns up.

When primary voters go to the polls in South Carolina on Saturday, they'll be the first in the nation to use all-new voting equipment. It's one of about a dozen states replacing all or most of their voting machines this year, in part because of security concerns after Russian interference in the 2016 election.

South Carolina officials are eager to emphasize the reliability of their state's equipment following the Iowa caucuses debacle, where a flawed app delayed the reporting of accurate results for weeks.
