The North Carolina National Guard is playing a key role in rescue and recovery efforts in Western North Carolina, much of it in the air. Major General Todd Hunt is Adjutant General of the NC National Guard. He spoke at a briefing yesterday at the Asheville Regional Airport on Monday afternoon.
"Right now, the National Guard, we have over almost 800 people on duty for this specific event. Our primary responsibility and our primary focus right now is still search and rescue or recovery and then a relocation followed by commodities. We brought in 100,000 pounds of water and commodities on a C-17. We've also done 100,000 pounds through our, helicopter lifts that we have," he said.
National Guard personnel from other states are also assisting with the effort.
