Woodard's Successor Blocked by County Commission Republicans

Commissioner Bill James has said he would like to take more time to look into Dunlap's background. Dunlap was nominated by party leaders Monday night to serve the remainder of Valerie Woodard's term, after her recent death. A majority vote of commissioners in favor of Dunlap is needed for him to be installed on the board. Last night's vote was split down party lines at 4-to-4. Dunlap - who's served 13-years on the local school board - says he's not surprised by the unanimous Republican opposition of his appointment. "All of these antics are devised by Bill James," Dunlap said. "And the rest of them simply go along. It simply amazes me that one person controls the mind of three other adults." Dunlap says he still plans to serve on the commission despite the opposition. Woodard's name will appear on the November ballot, but votes cast for her will count for Dunlap. Then, assuming he wins the election, Dunlap's installation on the board will come by at least December if commissioners continue to delay his appointment in the meantime.
