No holiday for many students and teachers

It's the Memorial Day holiday but school will be in session in the Charlotte region's largest districts. WFAE's Simone Orendain reports: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is making up for the March 2nd snow day with a school day today. It also means central office staff will have to go to work. In a March meeting, the CMS board designated Memorial day as the make-up. But it wasn't a unanimous vote. Three board members opposed it, including Ken Gjertsen. "You know, think about what we did. We said to the children that it's more important that you have spring break in tact than it is to remember the day when we honor those who died in service to their country," says Gjertsen. District officials pushed for the Memorial Day date. They pointed to studies that show attendance dips when a school day eats into longer vacation time. Union County Public Schools is also making up the snow day with a regular school schedule today. School districts in Cabarrus, Gaston and Iredell counties all have the day off. According to state law, the school year cannot end later than June 10th. And that's the last day of school for CMS and Union County.
