Towns Hope To Extend Library Hours With Volunteers

Charlotte Mecklenburg Libraries are only open four days a week due to budget cuts. But five towns in the county are hoping to operate their libraries an extra day with the help of volunteers. Matthews has put out the call for 50 volunteers who can shelve and check-in books several hours a week. The branch would need all those extra hands if the library wants to re-open on Mondays. Other towns have also said they plan to take a similar tack. The library system has agreed to train those volunteers because the towns each made an emergency contribution to the library's budget. Matthews spokeswoman Annette Privette-Keller said it's up to the towns to find the volunteers. "From the town's standpoint, we're mostly going to help them coordinate the public relations and marketing and their recruitment program for the volunteers and getting the word out on what a critical need this is for us," says Privette-Keller. For the time being, branches within Charlotte limits will remain open only four days a week. The library system has no immediate plans to extend their hours using volunteer labor.
