The Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have a suspect for what they think was a gang-related shooting late Saturday night in uptown Charlotte. A 22-year-old man was shot dead near the transit center as part of a large fight two hours after the Speed Street festival. Police arrested more than 70 people in what was one of the biggest outbreaks of violence uptown since July 4th, 2006. "We're actively out there pursuing that individual, and we hope within the next 24, 48 hours that's going to be a closed case," said Police Chief Rodney Monroe. He would not say the suspect's identity. He said there are ndications that the shooting was gang-related. Monroe said the crowds uptown swelled beyond what police had anticipated for the Speed Street festival. Police in riot gear were called to the four blocks around College and Trade streets, and they estimate up to 30,000 people crammed into that area late Saturday night. But Monroe says at no point did police lose control of the situation.
