15 Arrested At Immigration Protest Near Uptown
Fifteen people were arrested in connection with an immigrant rights protest this afternoon at Central Piedmont Community College. Nearly 200 people showed up for a 1 p.m. rally on campus, then proceeded to a march to the corner of Kings and Fourth Streets, where the protesters blocked all four intersections. At least seven of the arrested people had participated in the rally, announcing that they were living in the country illegally. Traffic was blocked for more than 30 minutes before police were able to clear the intersection. Capt. Jeff Estes said the individuals were accused of impeding traffic and civil disobedience.
