A 20-year-old UNC Charlotte student has been removed from school grounds after expressing a desire to commit gun violence on campus.

According to a campus-wide notice sent out Monday, officials were made aware of the student’s “disturbing ideations” and law enforcement quickly interceded.

UNCC spokesperson Buffie Stephens says she could not give any specific information about the student.

“Due to federal privacy law, we cannot discuss the student or specific steps that have been taken,” Stephens said.

Stephens says the student has been banned from campus, but has not been expelled.

WCNC reported that the student had told a doctor he wanted to "shoot up the school." The doctor alerted authorities and the student was admitted to a mental health facility for an evaluation, according to WCNC citing court documents. Stephens says she could not confirm that a doctor reported the student to authorities.

“The university is working through university policy and law enforcement to protect the safety and security of the university community,” Stephens said.
