16-Year-Old Killed, 3-Year-Old Injured In Hickory Shooting

A teenager was killed and a 3-year-old injured following a shooting at a Hickory apartment complex Thursday night. The Hickory Police Department said the shooting happened around 8:30pm at the Blue Ridge Heights apartments on 1st St. just south of downtown.

The department said Devin Lee, 16, died at the hospital as a result of his injuries. The 3-year-old was in the area at the time of the shooting and was hit with shrapnel. The child is being treated for non-life threatening injuries, according to the department.

Police said one suspect in the shooting, Zamare Davidson, 17, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a residence in neighboring Burke County.  Police arrested a second suspect, Jonathan Laxton, 20, at the same residence and charged him with accessory after the fact.

The department said the shooting appears to have been the result of an altercation between Lee and Davidson.

Marshall came to WFAE after graduating from Appalachian State University, where he worked at the campus radio station and earned a degree in communication. Outside of radio, he loves listening to music and going to see bands - preferably in small, dingy clubs.
