An autopsy report concludes that Erica Parsons, who was 13 years old when she was reported missing from the home of her adoptive parents in Rowan County in 2013, died of “homicidal violence of undetermined means.” The report released Tuesday by North Carolina’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner also found evidence of multiple “blunt force injuries” on the girl’s body, and numerous broken bones in “various stages of healing.”
In October 2016, Erica’s adoptive father, Sandy Parsons, led authorities to the girl’s skeletal remains in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. She’d been reported missing in July of 2013, although her adopted brother told authorities that he hadn’t seen Erica since late 2011.
According to the autopsy report, Erica’s remains also showed evidence of a growth deficit, and bone density “consistent with malnourishment.” The report also stated that the medical examiner’s office could not rule out the possibility that the girl may have died as a result of “blunt force injury, suffocation or strangulation.”
No one’s been charged in the teenager’s death. Erica’s adoptive parents, Sandy and Casey Parsons, were sentenced to prison in 2015 for defrauding the government by continuing to accept federal adoption assistance after the girl was no longer in their home.
