Charlotte Talks: 'Dangerous Times' For The NFL

Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018

For the past four NFL seasons, journalist Mark Leibovich had unparalleled access to the inner workings of the league as it faced a number of controversies. He and guest host Erik Spanberg discuss the state of the country's most popular sport, and how it found itself embroiled in politics.

The new NFL season picks up where the last one left off - at the center of a culture war touching on race, politics and patriotism.

It was reignited last week as Nike made Colin Kaepernick the face of its ad campaign. Kaepernick was already the face of the national anthem protest movement.

That protest was one of the controversies that New York Times Magazine journalist Mark Leibovich watched the NFL wrestle with. There was also the inappropriate behavior by now-former Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, which brought the #MeToo movement into the NFL.

His access to NFL owners has resulted in a new book, Big Game: The NFL in Dangerous Times.
