Charlotte Talks: Impeachment Has A Long History. What Can We Learn?

Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019

Impeachment. What it means, how it works and the striking connections to our politics today found in the first impeachment of Andrew Johnson.

After months of holding off more eager Democrats, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi launched an impeachment inquiry into President Trump.

Impeaching a president hasn’t happened very often and when it does, it is controversial, often unsuccessful and difficult for many to understand.

The first president to be impeached was Andrew Johnson. Author Brenda Wineapple wrote a book about America's first impeachment and sees important connections to today’s politics.

She joins Mike Collins along with a North Carolina expert to talk about our state's ties to impeachment on this episode of "Charlotte Talks."

Guests:

Brenda Wineapple, author of "The Impeachers: The Trial of Andrew Johnson and the Dream of a Just Nation."

Ned Barnett, associate opinion editor from The News & Observer
