Charlotte Talks Local News Roundup: New Election For 9th District; Rayquan Borum Jury Nearly Set

Friday, Feb. 22, 2019

The 9th Congressional District will now have a new election.  Despite random security checks, a CMS student is found with a gun on campus.  They’ve selected the jury in the Rayquan Borum case.  He faces murder charges in the death of Justin Carr.  And All-Star Weekend is behind us.  How are the reviews?  Mike Collins and our roundtable of reporters details those and other stories.

The North Carolina Board of Elections has been holding hearings this week into allegations of election fraud in the 9th Congressional District. In a surprise move on Thursday, Republican Mark Harris said he agreed that there should be a new election in the 9th district.  The Board of Elections then voted to grant a new election. WFAE's Steve Harrison has been in Raleigh throughout the week covering the hearings. He’ll bring a recap of what led to the outcome.

As CMS continues with random security checks of area high schools in an effort to deter school violence, officials at South Mecklenburg High School say a student was caught with a gun this week. We’ll talk about the district’s response.

Jury selection has been taking place in Charlotte the last two weeks in the case of Rayquan Borum, who faces a first degree murder charge in the death of Justin Carr. The shooting happened during the protests in Charlotte after the death of Keith Lamont Scott when he was shot by police in 2016. The pace of jury selection has some, including the judge, concerned. Jury selection finished up on Thursday. We'll talk about what's next.
