Many Charlotteans are back to work Monday after a weekend of rain from Hurricane Florence. The National Weather Service reported the city got about 7 inches of rain over the weekend.
On a sunny Monday afternoon Atul Mallik was walking back into work at Wells Fargo in uptown Chralotte. He spent the past few days inside watching television while the storm passed. His house didn’t have any damage, and he was back in the office Monday. Although, not all his colleagues were there.
“Some people didn’t show up, but are working from home [because they] had a tree fall down in their driveway and what not," he said. "But most of us are here. Just chugging along.”
On what is normally a busy lunch hour, Kidane Engita said he’s only had a few customers. He set up his hot dog cart like normal on the corner of 3rd and Tryon Streets.
“This time is regular lunch time, but today is very slow,” Engita said.
A few miles away in Freedom Park people were out walking their dogs and enjoying the dry weather. Fred Smith and his Festival in the Park crew were picking up sticks and getting ready for the event this weekend.
“We got a lot of small debris that we are cleaning up after the storm," Smith said. "We had some minor wind damage to our art boards. Some of our canopy tops were damaged , and they had to be repaired this morning.”
Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools were closed Monday, as many were used as shelters for evacuees. The five shelters are consolidating at the Grady Cole Center in the Central Piedmont community College Campus. CMS is returning to a normal schedule Tuesday.
