Charlotte's New Mayor: Patrick Cannon

Democrat Patrick Cannon won the mayoral race for Charlotte with 53 percent (50,768) of the vote. Republican Edwin Peacock had about 46.9 percent of the total votes with 44,922 votes. 

For the City Council at-large seats, the four with the most votes are all Democrats: Michael Barnes, Vi Lyles, David Howard and Claire Fallon. The top-vote getter in this race, Barnes, is now mayor pro tem. 

District 1: Democrat Patsy Kinsey was uncontested. 
District 2: Democrat Alvin Austin won with 80% of the vote. 
District 3: Democrat LaWana Mayfield (77%). 
District 4: Democrat Greg Phipps (67%).
District 5: Democrat John Autry was uncontested. 
District 6: Republican Kenny Smith was uncontested. 
District 7: Republican Ed Driggs  (72%). 

Among contested races in school board elections, Rhonda Lennon, Thelma Byers-Bailey, Tom Tate,  Eric Davis and Paul Bailey won seats. Joyce Waddell was uncontested in District 3. In both questions on bond referendums to support schools, about 75 percent of early voters chose yes. The first was a on $290 million CMS bonds to fund school construction and the second was a $210 million bond to build extra classrooms and lab spaces at community colleges. 

In Mecklenburg County, 17.63 percent (115,351) of registered voters participated in this general election.
