CMPD Arrests Student In Connection With Violent Threat

CMPD is investigating threats to two CMS schools that police believe were made by students. A 14-year-old female student at Southwest Middle School in Steele Creek was arrested in connection with a threat found on the social media site Snapchat. This comes two weeks after a 19-year-old shot and killed 17 students and teachers at a Florida high school. Assistant Chief Vicki Foster said that’s part of the reason officers are hyper-aware.

“The only part that we know really was what was on Snapchat. Something to the likes of I’m going to blow this place up or shoot this place up," Foster said describing the threat. "Very generic in the terms of what it is but being in light of all recent events we are taking everything very seriously.”

Foster said the student was charged with making a false report concerning mass violence on an educational property which is a felony. Officers got the details behind the threat overnight and interviewed students and parents. CMPD is still interviewing another person in connection with the investigation. That person has not yet been charged.

CMPD said there was another threat Wednesday about shooting a school bus at Community House Middle School in Ballantyne. Officers are talking to the student they believe made it and his family before he can come back to campus. Also Wednesday, a 17-year-old South Mecklenburg High School student was arrested for bringing a gun to school in his car.
