A pizza deliveryman shot three suspects who tried to rob him during a late-night delivery in Charlotte, police said Tuesday.

The man was delivering a pizza in an apartment complex Monday just before midnight when he was approached by four suspects who aimed at his head with what appeared to be an assault rifle, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release.

The delivery driver then pulled out his own pistol and fired at the suspects, causing them to flee on foot, police said. Officers arrived at the scene east of uptown Charlotte soon after the delivery man called 911.

Officers said they quickly apprehended three of the suspects, including two with gunshot wounds. A fourth was located at a nearby hospital when he was dropped off for treatment.

Police say a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old were charged as juveniles with robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery. An 18- and a 20-year-old suspect are facing the same charges as adults.

Officers said they determined that the object the suspects used was a toy rifle painted to look more like an assault rifle.

The news release referred to the delivery driver as a victim and didn't list any charges against him.
