The driver of a CMS school bus that crashed into a condominium Thursday morning in north Charlotte has been cited by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. CMS says there were 15 students on the bus at the time, but only minor injuries were reported.
According to CMPD, a preliminary investigation found that the bus left its lane of travel, struck a car stopped in a turn lane, then, ran off the road and into the building off Statesville Ave. near Norris Ave. Lashandra Chere Williams, 35, received a citation for “failure to maintain lane control.” CMPD says speed doesn’t appear to be a factor and that no evidence of impairment was found.
As is CMS policy, the driver received a drug screening. CMS said Friday afternoon Williams has been suspended with pay per CMS procedure.
“The district will review the results of [the] law enforcement investigation and act appropriately to help prevent future accidents and to maintain CMS’ existing daily high standard of safety,” said a statement from CMS.
Bus #509 was bound for Ransom Middle School.
