'Dough': Getting 'Baked' At The Charlotte Jewish Film Festival

Menemsha Films

Like its namesake mixture of flour, water, and yeast, “Dough” is a film with a simple story that rises to transform itself into something wonderful.

Nat Dayan is a Jewish baker in London, struggling to keep his shop open. Played by Jonathan Pryce, the baker is as crusty as week-old bread. He hires a teenaged African refugee to work in the shop. Entrepreneurial Aayash, played by Jerome Holder, sells cannabis on the side to support his family. One day, a mishap occurs and the weed gets accidentally mixed into the dough. Customers begin to clamor for the loaded loaves – and the two unlikely partners stumble into success.

“Dough” is the opening night film at the 2016 Charlotte Jewish Film Festival, now in its 12th season. “‘Dough’ offers the perfect combination of what we look for,” said CJFF festival director Benjamin Schwartz. “It’s light and fun, but with substance.”

The film also stars Pauline Collins and was directed by John Goldschmidt.

“Dough” will be shown at Temple Israel on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 7:15 pm. A dessert reception by Serafina’s catering will follow. The event is sponsored by the Charlotte Chapter of Hadassah.
