Dubois Says UNCC Plans Independent Review Of Shootings

UNC Charlotte Chancellor Phil Dubois says the university plans an "extensive independent and external" review of Tuesday's shooting on campus that killed two students and injured four others.

In a message on the UNCC website Thursday, Dubois said the review will look at "what went well" and what needs improvement in how the campus responded to the shooting.

On Wednesday, Dubois said the campus was prepared for a major incident, and had conducted an emergency drill last October.  He said emergency alerts got the word out quickly about the incident, and may helped ensure the situation was not worse.

Campus police Chief Jeff Baker said at a news conference Wednesday that the university also has held "table-top drills," to help plan for emergencies. And officials have led "safety walks" to help people know what to do in case of an incident.

"The chancellor has invested resources in safety and security," Baker said.

Baker said security systems already in place worked. That included one that allowed campus officials to lock the doors of campus buildings with the push of a button.

Other systems allowed officials to flash emergency alerts to every computer and TV screen on campus, and to send messages to mobile phones, email and the campus's smartphone app.

In his message Thursday, Dubois urged the campus community to make "self-care" a priority and said the university is making counseling services available.
