Duke Energy has agreed to refund $1.3 million to other utilities for overcharges uncovered in a federal audit following its 2012 merger with Progress Energy.
The finding came in a March 29 report from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), which spent two years reviewing Duke’s accounting practices.
The refunds will go to a small number of wholesale customers - mainly other utilities that pay to use Duke’s transmission lines, Duke Energy spokesman David Scanzoni said.
FERC audited Duke’s finances from the period Jan. 1, 2011, to Jan. 31, 2016. The agency looked at how well Duke was following conditions required in FERC’s approval of the Duke-Progress. FERC also looked at other Duke business operations unrelated to the merger.
The report lists eight findings and 37 recommendations for corrective action. Scanzoni said Duke did not contest the findings and has agreed to comply.
