A gas station clerk was fatally shot Monday morning in west Charlotte in what police say appears to have been a robbery.

CMPD says officers found Ismael Doumbia, 50, with a gunshot wound while responding to a call of assault with a deadly weapon around 3:30am at a Shell station on Freedom Drive near Alleghany Street.

Police say Doumbia was taken to the hospital where he died a short time later. No arrests have been reported.

It’s the 53rd homicide in Charlotte this year. There were 57 in all of last year.

Marshall came to WFAE after graduating from Appalachian State University, where he worked at the campus radio station and earned a degree in communication. Outside of radio, he loves listening to music and going to see bands - preferably in small, dingy clubs.
