The Confederate monument outside the Gaston County courthouse has drawn calls for its removal.

Gaston County Commissioners have scheduled a special meeting Monday to vote on removing a Confederate monument outside the Gaston County courthouse.

Commission Chair Tracy Philbeck has drafted a plan that would turn the statue over to a local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

A Facebook post from Tracy Philbeck.

The group would be given six months to find a new spot where the statue of the Confederate soldier can be relocated. In its place, the county would erect a monument to all Gaston County soldiers that have died in the line of duty.

The new plan differs from a previous one to let residents vote on the monument's removal. State lawmakers told the Gaston Gazette that doing so would require changing a state law, and that’s unlikely to happen before the November election.
