As backlash against House Bill 2 continues to mount, Governor Pat McCrory appeared on NBC’s Meet The Press Sunday in his second interview since signing the new controversial law.
Speaking to NBC’s Chuck Todd, McCrory said he didn’t believe it was up to the government to decide bathroom or non-discrimination policies for private businesses, and said the Charlotte city council had overreached when it passed the city’s non-discrimination ordinance in February.
“I made a point when I was mayor of Charlotte for 14 years, we dealt with fire and police and airports and roads and light rail lines - we didn’t impose new regulations on businesses,” McCrory said. “And I don’t think the government ought to be the HR director for every business, whether it be in Charlotte, or whether it be in Greensboro, or whether it be in Boone, North Carolina.”
McCrory said he wouldn't have a problem if a private business wanted to enact its own LGBT protections.
“But, I do believe in our high schools, in our middle schools, in our universities, we should continue to have the tradition that we’ve been having in this country for years,” McCrory said. “We have a women’s facility and a men’s facility. You know, it’s worked out pretty well, and I don’t think we need any further government interference.”
McCrory reiterated he will ask legislators to repeal part of the law that bans workers from filing discrimination claims in state court. He also called for both sides to stop making threats, and instead have a more open dialogue.
