Judge Finds Borum Competent To Stand Trial

Mecklenburg County Courthouse
NC Courts

A Mecklenburg County judge has found that Rayquan Borum is competent to stand trial in the 2016 murder of Justin Carr in uptown Charlotte. That means jury selection in the case will resume Monday.

The ruling came after a mental evaluation of Borum Friday morning. That was ordered after he appeared sleepy and inattentive during proceedings Thursday.

Jail officials said Thursday afternoon his condition may have been the result of his anti-depressant medication.

Borum is accused of shooting Carr during a demonstration uptown following the police killing of Keith Lamont Scott.

Jury selection had been suspended to allow for Friday’s evaluation of Borum.  It’s now scheduled to continue first thing Monday.

No jurors have been chosen yet, from among a pool of several dozen. Judge Gregory Hayes said the trial could take three or four weeks.
