A judge is ordering North Carolina election officials not to finalize November ballots while she receives more information about lawsuits filed by two judicial candidates. Both candidates have sued to have their party affiliation included next to their name on the ballots.
One is state Supreme Court candidate Chris Anglin, who switched from Democrat to Republican. The GOP- controlled General Assembly over the weekend finalized a bill that says a judicial candidate's party won't be on the ballot if the person changed parties fewer than 90 days before filing, which applies to Anglin.
Wake County Superior Court Judge Rebecca Holt Monday asked attorneys for both sides to file briefs and prepare for a hearing next Monday. State election officials have said the deadline for language that will appear on the ballot is this week. It's unclear what a delay would mean.
